96- Special edition 3 - LGBTQ+ (7) - Historic U.N. Decision

I haven't fully read the article but I must share it with you. The gist is simple : expanding the Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations to encompass violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

This clearly means that discrimination, agression, violence or attack against LGBTQ+ (or any other acronym you choose) would be a violation of their human rights. Plain and simple. It had to be done.

It's now a historic fact, in a groundbreaking first-ever such resolution by the United Nations.

I'll remind you that homosexuality alone is still illegal in ... 76... SEVENTY SIX countries around the globe. Let that number sink in. It's huge... but so is this U.N. decision.

It's high time that the international community at large adresses all the issues difficulties and dangers faced by the LGBT community at large, and each and every single individual.

This must help, in the wake of the horrible attack on the LGBT nightclub Pulse in Florida, where 49 people have been murdered and 52 others wounded - because of their sexual orientation and gender identities. This has to stop, and the U.N. decision may not achieve it just yet - the work is barely starting. But a small, and late start, is better than nothing.

I doubt it'll deter the most extremely prejudiced people, but it might very well make others closer to the fence think twice, because an act deemed a violation of human rights carries its weight in courts, as far as I understand it. (correct me if I'm miles off).

Most of all, the international community must pressure those 76 countries to change their laws and start healing the planet from its long, lethargic and discriminatory behaviors and préjudices. It's time to wake up and heal this massive wound caused to far too many people on our planet.

I hope the U.N will tackle fighting the countries where homosexuality isn't only illegal but also punishable by death.

Economic and political sanctions must fall on these countries, and FORCE them into change. Hit where it hurts the most: their wallets.

But, I'll stop here, before I get lost... suffice to say, there is a lot of work to be done, but the U.N is on the right track. My congratulations to their brave decision which happens during June, LGBT awareness month. Well done.
