lulupetals is a mental health and lifestyle blog. It's mostly about my stories and experiences with mental illness, but includes some sociopolitical topics and lifestyle entries - with additional pages to appear soon. Best reading platform is the PC, as the Mobile version omits all keywords/labels and my entries are so long. 45- Special Edition 1- Sexual Assault Awareness (2)
April is the month of international Sexual Assault Awareness, very heavy topic but about to be treated to light the lantern of those who do not know about the victims, far too many.
Indeed, worldwide sexual assaults of all kinds are perpetrated and the statistics are alarming ...
In France, the High Council for equality between women and men has compiled statistics for the country that I copy here and comments - and let you read the sources of the linked site.
16% of women and 5% of men report having experienced rape or attempted rape in their lifetime. >> Because we know that the majority of victims do not report, because of the trauma, sometimes and often coupled with guilt and shame, it can be assumed that much more % have really faced rape or attempts...
1 woman in 10 to under age of 20 claims to have been sexually assaulted during her life. >> I think it speaks for itself and I repeat my previous comment ...
Between 2010 and 2012, 83000 women were victims of rape or attempted rape annually (0.5% of women).
83% of them know their attacker: 31% of perpetrators are known but are not part of the victim's household; 31% of the perpetrators are spouses living with the victim at the time; 21% of authors in the household but are not the spouse; 17% of the perpetrators are unknown to the victim.
Only 11% of victims file complaints, 13% deposit ''main courante'' (french filing term, I cannot find an English one for it).
Women are three times more often victims of sexual violence than men.
In 2011, out of 4983 complaints of rape, 3742 rapes were committed against women and 432 against men. ; 906 of these rapes were marital rape committed against women and 179 against men.
In 2010, there were 1356 convictions for rape and 8235 convictions for sexual offenses. Convictions for rape are, in 2010, 50.1% of 2706 convictions for crime. In 98% of cases for these crimes, the prison sentence is the rule. The penalties are an average of 8.9 years (life excluded).
Violence against women in armed conflict is often manifested by sexual violence. 250 000 to 500 000 women were raped during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, from 20 000 to 50 000 women were raped during the Bosnian war in the early 1990s.
These figures are very scared and cold in the back ... being pro-feminist since my 10 years, I am alarmed that in the 21st century, many cases are swept under the carpet and that the case did not advance quickly deal with this social evil ...
Third part on April 17th
